We would like to say a special thank you to Dr Brett Finlay, who sat on the BCCDC Foundation Board as a Director from January 2014 to September 2015. In this time, Dr Finlay supported our work and gave his thoughtful expertise to our development. He was our inaugural Scientific Advisory Board Chair and helped us to develop the SAB, and we appreciate all his help.
Dr Finlay is a Professor in the Michael Smith Laboratories, and the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia. In collaboration with pharmaceutical companies, Dr Finlay’s lab at UBC continues its work to identify compounds which will block bacterial infection and treat it once it has occurred. In addition to his research, Dr Finlay is a prolific author and tireless lecturer. He is well-recognized internationally for his work, and has won several prestigious awards, including the E.W.R. Steacie Prize, the CSM Fisher Scientific Award, a MRC Scientist, five Howard Hughes International Research Scholar Awards, a CIHR Distinguished Investigator, BC Biotech Innovation Award, the Michael Smith Health Research Prize, the IDSA Squibb award, and the Jacob Biely Prize. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, an Officer of Canada, was awarded the Order of BC, and is a UBC Peter Wall Distinguished Professor.
We are lucky to have enjoyed Dr Finlay’s expertise and willingness to contribute to growing the BCCDC Foundation over the last couple of years. We wish him the best of luck on all his future endeavours!
